Torremolinos, July 12, 2021.
The Councilor for Culture of the Torremolinos City Council, David Tejeiro, delivered last Saturday at the Casa de Los Navajas the prizes of the I Contest of Comics of the municipality. Melissa Castiñeira Pereira, in the category over 18 years old, and Laura López Cano and Mencía Paula García Castillo, in that of minors, were winners of this contest to which some thirty creators and creators have participated.
Tejeiro has highlighted the "good reception" that this first contest has had and the "great quality" of the works that have been presented. In total, 29 works by artists from Torremolinos and also from outside our city who have dealt with very diverse themes, using techniques that are also very varied and of extraordinary graphic value.
The contest rules included two age categories, one up to 18 years old, in which 13 works have been presented, and another from 18 years old, in which 16 works have been received. "In addition to recognizing the works that the jury has considered most outstanding, the objective is to be able to publish all the works that have been presented with a small edition that can be seen both in municipal libraries and in other public spaces", said the mayor expressing the intention of the Culture area to give continuity to the contest and make it grow for future editions.
As the councilor recalled, the contest was launched with the aim of “promoting creativity, fostering artistic expression and supporting interest in the world of comics in the city”, a narrative formula that continues to have a wide audience, a great ability to tell stories and is also a great resource for the beginning of reading.
In this sense, the contest has had a great participation of young people. Laura López Cano and Mencía Paula García Castillo have been the winners in their category with a work in which they reflect on toxic relationships and the ability of women to detect and get out of them today. On his part, Tomás Cortina, the youngest of the winners, has won the second prize with a comic of great pictorial quality and a story that brings the samurai to the 21st century.
Melissa Castiñeira Pereira's work, entitled Pantalax, recovers the manga aesthetic, while Alejandro Zaragoza Ortega, second prize in the category over 18, with 'La joven del fuego', leaves us a comic book that includes multimedia elements through a code QR in which we can listen to the music that the story talks about and thus immerse ourselves directly in it, a sad and evocative story.
The first prize is endowed with a check for 100 euros and the second with a check for 50 euros for the purchase of material at the Pergamon Bookstore. All the works presented can be viewed on the web www.torremolinoscultura.es.
